Artist, collector of moments, and enthusiastic collaborator with the sun

I'm a cyanotype artist based in Vermont, and my work explores nature, memory, and the ways we connect to the world around us.

I work with botanicals, photography, and textiles — using one of the oldest photographic printing processes — to preserve moments, places, and things that might otherwise be forgotten.

A lot of what I make begins with something simple: a leaf from my garden, flowers saved from a special occasion, or a photograph taken while traveling.

A little sunlight, a little science, a little magic.

One of the things I love most about cyanotype is how unpredictable it can be. Working with sunlight, water, and light-sensitive chemistry means giving up a certain amount of control and letting nature have a hand in the finished piece. I like to think of nature as a co-artist, where the materials and environment are just as important as whatever idea I started with. Sometimes I have a clear vision of what I want to create, and other times I'm just curious to see what happens. The unexpected results are often my favorites.

My work includes large-scale botanical prints, experimental wet cyanotypes, photographic prints, and secondhand clothing that I give new life through the cyanotype process. I enjoy moving between different materials and techniques, but I find that much of my work comes back to the same thing: exploring what's around me and finding ways to hold on to the memories and experiences connected to it.

I first learned cyanotype in 2017 on the rooftop of my New York City apartment, with a small patch of sunlight, a tray of chemistry, and whatever materials I could find. It started as a fun way to decompress from the chaos of city life, but I kept coming back to it. There was something about the process that made me slow down, pay attention, and look at ordinary things a little differently.

In 2022, I moved to Vermont with my husband, Grady, where a bigger garden and the changing seasons opened up new possibilities for my work. I now grow and gather many of the botanicals I use, spending warmer months working outside and the long Vermont winters experimenting in my studio. I also love to travel, and those experiences often find their way into my work through photographs, collected plants, or ideas that follow me home.

Kelly From Earth is where all of these interests come together. It's a place for me to explore, experiment, and share what I'm making, whether that's a print on paper, a piece of clothing, or something I haven't tried before. I also teach cyanotype workshops, which have become one of my favorite ways to share the process. I love seeing what other people create, especially when they start embracing the unexpected and realizing there's no single right way to make something.

When I'm not making blue things, I'm usually in the garden, traveling, or hanging out with my husband and our three very involved studio assistants: Nandor, our Welsh Terrier and Chief Snoopervisor, and Tater and Fika, our two cats who have appointed themselves head gardeners.
