Cyanotype Botanical Wide Leg Linen Pants

$120.00

These are a pair of wide leg linen pants with an elastic waistband, a relaxed fit from hip to hem, and a raw cutoff edge at the ankle that gives them an easy, undone finish. The fabric is lightweight and breathable; the kind of pants that get better the more you wear them.

Both front patch pockets are fully sun-printed with cyanotype botanicals: a large fern frond on the left, flowers and foliage on the right. The rest of the garment is left unpainted, which lets the deep prussian blue of the print speak for itself against the chambray linen.

The raw hem at the ankle was cut intentionally to suit the proportions of the wide leg. It will fray very slightly with washing, which only adds to the character.

Printed using Jacquard SolarFast, a permanent, washable photographic dye developed specifically for natural fibers. Unlike traditional cyanotype, SolarFast bonds directly to the fabric at a molecular level when activated by UV light — making it significantly more colorfast than iron-based cyanotype processes. The botanicals were pressed directly onto the treated fabric and exposed to sunlight. No screens, no transfers, no two prints alike.

Botanicals used: fern frond, wildflowers, and mixed foliage — grown and foraged from my studio in northern Vermont

Print placement:

  • Left front patch pocket — large fern frond

  • Right front patch pocket — flowers and foliage

  • Waistband, legs, and back — unpainted

Care

SolarFast is durable but benefits from a little intention in the wash.

  • Wash as little as possible — spot clean when you can

  • Turn inside out before washing

  • Hand wash in cold water with a phosphate-free liquid soap — Dr. Bronner's castile soap or Ecomax Natural work well

  • Avoid bleach, Oxiclean, borax, washing soda, powdered detergents, baking soda, or any washing salts

  • Air dry away from direct sunlight, or tumble alone on low heat

  • If fading occurs over time, a dilute hydrogen peroxide bath can usually restore the print to its original vibrancy

  • Handle printed areas with care — sweat and hand oils can cause gradual discoloration

Returns

All sales are final. Please refer to measurements carefully before purchasing — as a one-of-a-kind piece, exchanges for size are not possible. Minor signs of prior wear are part of the garment's history. Please reach out if you have questions or concerns; I am happy to work with you!
